Why most retaining walls fail

A $3,000 garden wall is not a $25,000 structural wall. The difference is everything.

Most failed walls on Orange County hillsides were built by landscapers, not contractors. They skip drainage, skip engineering, skip proper footings — and the wall bows, cracks, or collapses within 5 years. Here’s the difference between what almost everyone builds and what we build.

The cheap way

Pretty on day one. Bulging by year three.

No soils analysis — wall assumes flat-lot pressures

No drainage weep system — water builds up and pushes the wall out

No geogrid, no tiebacks — relies only on gravity

Shallow footing — first wet winter undermines the base

No engineer’s stamp, no warranty — uninsurable and unsellable at resale

Warranty? None, and the builder is long gone anyway

vs.

The Sunset way

Engineered. Drained. Reinforced. Built to outlive the house.

Slope & soil assessed before we quote — we tell you what’s really going on

Full drainage system: perforated pipe, gravel, weep holes, filter fabric

Geogrid reinforcement & proper batter on anything over 4 feet

Excavated & compacted footing below frost/moisture line

Structural engineering & stamped drawings included on walls that need them

Clean documentation — helps at resale and stands up to inspection

Our process

From site visit to final backfill — no corners cut.

Retaining walls are not a “get in, get out” job. Here’s how a proper wall gets built.

01

Site Visit & Soil Read

Santos walks the slope, measures, tests drainage, and flags red signals like cracks in existing walls or pooling. You get a written plan and price.

Day 1

02

Engineering & Planning

Walls over 4 feet (or any wall with a surcharge) get engineered drawings and structural detailing. We coordinate the engineer and paperwork — you don’t have to chase it.

1–3 weeks

03

Demo & Excavation

Failing wall comes out. Trench is dug below finish grade, footing is formed and properly compacted. Drainage pipe and gravel go in before a single block is set.

Days 1–3

04

Build, Drain, Backfill

Block or poured concrete goes up with geogrid courses as needed. Backfill compacted in 8-inch lifts. Weep system installed. Cap course finishes the wall.

Days 3–10

Recent wall work

Hillside walls from across Southern California.

From 4-foot backyard terraces in Fullerton to 14-foot engineered slopes in Yorba Linda, every wall below was engineered, reinforced, and built by the same Sunset crew.

Meet the family

A father & son crew — still on every job.

Sunset Demolition Experts started with Santos Sr. and one pickup truck in the early 2000s. Two decades later, his son Santos Jr. runs the business alongside him — and you’ll still find one or both of them on site for every residential project.

We built the business on one stubborn rule: if we tear something out, we leave it better than we found it. That’s why we learned the concrete side ourselves instead of handing customers off to another crew. It’s more work. It’s also the reason our driveways are still holding up twenty years later.

Common questions

Answered before you ask.

A simple 3-foot block wall runs $60–$90 per face foot installed ($2,500–$5,000 for a small job). Engineered walls 4–8 feet with proper drainage and geogrid run $150–$250 per face foot ($10,000–$25,000 is typical). Tall engineered walls on steep hillsides in Anaheim Hills or Yorba Linda often run $25,000–$50,000 once soils reports, structural detailing, and specialty drainage are included. We give you a written price with every line item after the site visit.

Any wall over 4 feet tall (measured from footing to top) almost always requires an engineered design in California. Any wall that supports a slope, a driveway, a pool deck, or any structure above it needs engineering regardless of height. If a contractor offers to skip engineering on those, walk away — it’s unsafe, uninsurable, and sets you up for a failure you’ll pay to rebuild.

Often yes. Bulging, leaning, or new cracks after heavy rain usually mean hydrostatic pressure is building behind the wall because the drainage has failed — and failure can happen fast once it starts. Call us the same day. We can usually get out within 24–48 hours to assess whether the wall can be saved with drainage work or needs to come down before it takes your slope with it.

CMU (concrete block) is the workhorse — cost-effective, strong, and fine for most walls under 8 feet. Poured concrete is the premium option for tall walls, clean-line modern aesthetics, and walls taking serious lateral load. Stacked stone and segmental retaining wall (SRW) block is great up to about 6 feet for landscape-forward looks. We build all three and steer you by use case, budget, and site constraints — not by what’s easiest for us.

From first site visit to final backfill: typically 2–6 weeks total for a fully engineered wall. Engineering, drawings, and structural detailing take the first 1–3 weeks. Actual build time on site is usually 5–10 working days for walls up to about 40 linear feet. Simpler landscape walls under 4 feet can often move faster. Emergency rebuilds after storm failures are prioritized and frequently expedited.

Drainage is where 80% of retaining walls fail. Every wall we build gets a perforated pipe at the base in gravel, wrapped in filter fabric, with weep holes through the wall face every 8–10 feet, daylighted to a surface discharge point. We don’t pour or stack anything until drainage is installed and inspected. If water can’t escape, the wall can’t stand.

In most cases, yes. We can source matching block, tint concrete to match existing finishes, and replicate stone patterns. We’ll never promise an invisible match — natural stone ages, concrete weathers — but we can get close enough that casual observers won’t notice.
